Her Will

Yesterday I went to visit Linda. She has been through a lot since I last posted about her. She had left the shelters and moved into her own home in a government subsidized project. In her new place, she had seemed happy, talkative and open.

After about four months had past, her health deteriorated. Linda’s neighbor had found her on the floor unresponsive. She had been there for two days. She is now living in a nursing home for the time being. When I went to find her, a nurse had to point me to her as I did not recognize her. She lost so much weight, her frame is skeletal and she is now in a wheelchair. The nurses say she is not eating much.

She and I found a place in the dining hall that was quiet to talk. We sat there in silence for a long time. If I asked her a question, her response was yes or no without elaboration. When I asked her how is her will to live, she put her head down, chipped at her worn nail polish, and slowly replied “it’s good.” I gave her some updates about my own life and she listened intently.

We continued to sit in silence. Linda seemed so tired....

I mentioned that Etta James had died. She asked who was she. I explained that James sang a famous song called “At Last." Linda looked at me blankly. Then I played it on my phone. She closed her eyes, she smiled knowingly and began to hum along....

Father's Day is just another day for Peggy and her family

I visited Peggy the other day at her home. She spoke of Father’s Day. She said it doesn’t mean much for these kids, like many people she knows, there is no father around. She said that her sons’ father was killed by gunshot before they could know him. She has since been searching for a male role model for them. Her youngest son had a role model who was his football coach at Derrick Thomas Academy up until he was killed in a motorcycle accident this year. Derrick Thomas Academy was named in memory of a football player who was a role model for many inner city children. Derrick Thomas died from a car accident in 2000.

Peggy currently lives with many members of her extended family, including her sister and several neices with their children under one roof. They all work together to provide and take care of the children. The only adult male in the house is her brother.

Peggy's youngest son, age 13, comes home from visiting friends.

Starting Salaries for Teachers in KCMO School District is Low

After reading an article on teacher's salaries from the New York Times today, I decided to look how KCMO schools faired. What I found is that KCMSD has one of the lowest starting salaries of approximately 100 districts surrounding it. The salary range meets the average as the pay scale increases with time. But the lifetime average that a teacher earns is less because of the starting salary. Read More Research Here on KCMO Schools

With the research from the New York Times article, "McKinsey polled 900 top-tier American college students and found that 68 percent would consider teaching if salaries started at $65,000 and rose to a maximum of $150,000. " it is evident that teachers salaries, especially Kansas City, Missouri Teacher's salaries are not attractive to top scholars as job choice.

"At the moment, the average teacher’s pay is on par with that of a toll taker or bartender. Teachers make 14 percent less than professionals in other occupations that require similar levels of education. In real terms, teachers’ salaries have declined for 30 years. The average starting salary is $39,000; the average ending salary — after 25 years in the profession — is $67,000. This prices teachers out of home ownership in 32 metropolitan areas, and makes raising a family on one salary near impossible." NYT Article on Teacher's Salaries

My mother was a teacher when I was growing up. She once told me that they were making the same salary as the people who take out the garbage. Not much has changed.

Yesterday, I spoke with the receptionist at Operation Breakthrough. I asked her if she knew of any grocery stores in the area that closed. She recalled "Country Mart" on 31st and Prospect as being one. It was her favorite store. "It's terrible because old people and people without cars or means no longer can get the groceries they need easily," she said.

Today while sitting in on a nutrition class at Emancipation Station women's shelter, I was thinking about "food deserts". There is a disparity in the number of grocery stores on the East Side of Kansas City. The choices for food for anyone who walks or rides the bus is limited to pharmacy type stores, convenience stores, fast food chains and liquor stores. A fresh vegetable or fruit is hard to find. It seems ironic that the woman speaking to the homeless is trying to teach nutrition and good choices for food. But with this new knowledge, these women have very little chance of actually practicing it. The food stores that supply the produce and non-processed foods have already evacuated the neighborhoods. Some clients mentioned that there was a "Piggly Wiggly" store that went out of business last week over on the Kansas side. Their experience with shopping there was that things were expired. Often over 2 months expired.

Why are there no grocery stores? Was there no demand? It seemed from my small sampling of the poorest of the poor in Kansas City, that these women had a desire to cook with these raw foods. They shared tips on how to handle chili peppers and store homemade soups and prepared meats. It seems they had the knowledge. Was the food simply too time consuming? Too expensive for a population who individually must work several jobs to make ends meet?

Lizzie was a prostitute in the 1980's on the East Side of Kansas City during the same time serial killer Terry Blair was killing prostitutes. One of his victims was a friend of hers. She tells a story of a hard childhood, struggles with addiction, abuse and nearly losing her life before coming clean at a recovery house. Her one year anniversary for being sober will be August of 2011.

Merry Christmas! The kids are writing letters to loved ones, cookies are in the oven. The tree is lit and we have spoken to relatives all over the world to wish them joy and love during the holidays. I'm thankful for my family and all the people in my life who have influenced me.

Featured above is Michael Evans. He told me his name is not important. I met him at Parkville Coffee House where he said, "I've never owned a credit card, a checkbook or a bank card in my life." He has never been in debt and has lived as a squatter for some years before settling into an abandoned shelter near the railroad that he renovated. He now works as a handy-man and runs his own business.

Clothing Giveaway at Emancipation Station

Emancipation Station, a day shelter for women, opened it's doors to the public Friday and Saturday to give away used and donated clothing. Men, women and children were able to receive many items they need. With temperatures dropping below freezing this weekend, the giveaway was a necessary event for many.

Recognizing the needs of the homeless, Pastor Alice Piggee-Wallack, founder of True Light Family Resource Center and Emancipation Station, with the help of volunteer, Hector Ponce, organized and provided the clothing giveaway. Mr. Ponce has been donating his time weekly categorizing donations in the clothing closet so that women may find their sizes easily and quickly in times of crisis. Maria Creyts' Exhibition in the BNIM Architects Building

Maria Creyts shared her passion for unique mixtures of color, fabric and textures at BNIM last First Friday, December 3rd, 2010. In the heart of downtown Kansas City near the Power and Light District Ms. Creyts' photo friezes were hung in 10 window frames of one of the most prestigious art deco buildings in Kansas City. Ms Creyts' visual displays bring a whimsical yet harmonic adornment to an already beautiful building. Thinking of the daily work of architects Ms. Creyts imagined that they have a similar understanding and appreciation for her placement of fabrics and with various textures and colors beside one another.

Ms Creyts describes on her website, www.mariaurora.net, her reason for using fabrics in her art. She said,

"To me, fabric offers a ready palette of pattern and color. I could hunt for patterned papers and make pasted collages… yet the supply of fabrics is greater, more varied, and texture is an added bonus. With fabric, I can construct. In elementary school, book reports were my favorite assignment as I
could make papier mache sculptures to go along with any storyline (looking back, I realize I got quite carried away !). Fashioning things in three dimensions has always been a part of what I do.

The formal structural language for fabric is one I am acquainting myself with: corded shirring, shell hems and ruffles, darted and curve-cut flounces, smocked tucks, box pleats… In most every case I adapt the standard method to suit atypical purposes."

Maria Creyts graduated from Yale University School of Art with an Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and printmaking. She has also a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics and painting from the Kansas City Arts Institute. Ms. Creyts is a full time faculty member at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh as part of the online division. Linda

I first met Linda at The Emancipation Station, a day shelter for women. Linda has been homeless since February. She has been living in shelters from month to month. Her only income is a few dollars support every week from her brothers and sisters. She has been hunting for jobs weekly through Goodwill Industries and other organizations with no success. After a relationship dissolved at the beginning of the year Linda became homeless at 47 years old. She has an 19 year old daughter and a 2 month old grandson.

The women at the day shelter describe Linda as a little lady with a big voice. They enjoy her infectious loud laugh. When others have a story to tell, she is the one who listens. Linda is known to help women with their children when they need it and with getting chores done around the shelter.

Recently, Linda has been diagnosed with Emphysema and COPD. She has not laughed much in the last couple of weeks and has been in and out of the emergency room several times. When I saw her Monday, she was very sick, was unable to do anything, very quiet.

One would think she has a death wish because, despite her diagnosis, she continues to smoke. She said smoking calms her nerves and her addiction to menthol cigarettes, the least expensive in the neighborhood, is "rough." The doctor recommended the patch, but she cannot afford it.

Linda took a break for an emergency inhale of medicine at Kitty's Restaurant near the Emancipation Station.

In giving thanks this Thanksgiving, I want to recognize Linda, for being a genuine and beautiful person.

I finished shooting the first half of Nicole's story and hope to find a place to publish it when I am finished editing.

Nicole, age 23, moved into an apartment last Friday with her three children after they were homeless for over two months.

Here are some images of an ongoing project I'm currently doing. They are the very early stages of documenting life at Operation Breakthrough, a daycare center located in Kansas City established to help children living in poverty gain access to education, clothing and medical care. It provides care for infants to grade school children and before and after school care for school- aged children. There is a waiting list of approximately 1200 children and the enrollment priority is given to homeless children. Operation Breakthrough sometimes serves as the child's only source of stability, clothing, food and healthcare. Teachers, therapists and healthcare workers struggle together everyday to bring these children a chance at opportunity

People from the Fred Phelp's following decided to picket The Pembroke Hill School for some reason that no one seems to understand and UMKC for it's screening of The Laramie Project. Many passersby found it very difficult to comprehend the reasoning behind their rhetoric. Several observers tried to get into philosophical and ethical discussions with them and ending in no resolution while others simply responded by showing them the middle finger.

After visiting the Emancipation Station, a shelter for women, I thought about it a long time afterwards. I was in awe of Pastor Alice Pigee-Wallack who runs the center. Her strength for dealing with the difficult and hard stories of these women. Sometimes it is a story of mental illness, sometimes drugs, abuse, or just hard luck. Just recently "Pastor Alice" as they call her, told me that the story we did helped them earn a $5000 grant. It motivates me to go out and do more photography like this.

A Teacher of Note

I just finished my work at the MPW. We had our exhibition at the local library with a great turnout. Below is a quick summary of my story. It was a wonderful experience to work directly with some of the most talented people in the industry, Dennis Dimick and George Olson, and to see the end reaction of the town to our work.

Scott Taylor is a music-loving school teacher and softball coach at St. Pius X, a local Catholic high school in Crystal City.

Taylor, as his students call him, often uses music to motivate his students to be more engaged in learning, such as paralleling Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales with “The Battle of Evermore” by Led Zeppelin. He uses many musical euphemisms in class to make things fun, such as a weekly vocabulary list he calls the “greatest hits.” His walls and bookshelves at home and in his classroom are replete with music and sports paraphernalia.

Taylor is responsible for writing many of the songs by The Bottle Rockets, a rock band considered to be the godfathers of the '90s alt/country-roots rock revival originally from Festus and Crystal City. Some members of the band were his students at St. Pius X.

Missouri Photo Workshop

I just learned that I am accepted to the Missouri Photo Workshop starting next week.

It is "a remarkable documentary effort. Since 1949 more than 2,000 photographers from around the world have worked in more than 40 small Missouri communities to create a historic and unique archive."

It is run by the University of Missouri-Columbia's School of Journalism

This photo is from last year's girl scout trip to the Omaha Zoo. We were able to sleep overnight in the aquarium and view the animals in the dark. It was a treat, also to avoid all of the crowds of people usually there.

Now school has started again. The weather is getting colder. A few leaves have fallen and the alarm rings me out of bed at 6am. Kids are excited and learning new things everyday. Soccer, piano, drama and playdates..... the schedules go on.... but there is also some free time during the day. Everything is just... well more... scheduled... :)

When I don't have an assignment to do, I have been doing wedding photography. I find it very satisfying because it's always a celebratory atmosphere. People are aware and want you to be there with the camera. Ample opportunities arise to find that documentary shot. For me I enjoy capturing the emotion. Very few of the photos are staged but of course there are times where deliberate photos are necessary for preserving the day.

The running is going well. Lately I've taken up interval training on the 6th mile. Maybe last time was overdoing it a bit. I took a day off because my calves are tight. Just going up stairs gives me a "charlie horse".

So far I have now run up that %&## hill twice! In the spirit of full disclosure, I had to stop at the top to catch my breath...

The Hill

Every up hill must go down, right??!

This is the most difficult part of the run. I can almost run up the whole thing but it is pretty much the only place I walk during the route.

Today was a slow start, some excuses + a demotivating scale. But I got out there with the support of my husband. Ran a bit slow today and walked a little more than yesterday, but I still think I got a good work out. Still did the 6 miles, so I'll call it a success.

Going to the river this weekend with some longtime friends. Will probably have to start all over Monday. Such is life, or such is the good life ;)

I started running several months ago on an old treadmill. Somehow it's design only allows for it to be slightly inclined. During this time I tried to just be able to stay at a run for 30 minutes. It seemed that every day was up and down. I was happy if I did 2.5 miles. Then one day I decided to take a run outside from my house to the river and back. I did not know how far or long it was. I only knew that it felt like a very decent run. I got home and saw that I ran 1 hour and 20 minutes. Then I mapped it at mapmyrun.com and found that I ran 6 miles. (well ok walked about 1 mile of it.) Ever since, I have been running 6 miles every day or every other day now for about 2 weeks. And walking very little, only on the hill that is straight up. It feels great. Still I'm a slow runner. But I'm happy just to say I'm doing it. The new shoes made such a difference on my knees and toes. I feel I could go on doing this for a while. I'll see how I feel tomorrow morning... :)
